ORGANIZATION OF RUSSIAN LANGUAGE CLASSES
Classes are small, with a maximum of 10 participants. The emphasis is
on developing fluency and confidence in using conversational Russian. Active
learning techniques such as role play and group-work are stressed. Language
laboratory and computer activities form an important part of the program.
Each student is provided with a set of necessary materials for individual
language tuition.
The intensive and Standard Russian Language Courses Beginner, Elementary
and Advanced levels. Students do a placement test on arrival and joint
a class at the appropriate level.

Intensive Course :
This course is intended for those who wish to make more rapid progress
in Russian. 4 hours of class each morning provide systematic practice in
essential language skills, stressing the grammar of the language. While
in the afternoon emphasis is placed on helping you to communicate more
fluently and clearly in Russian. This program is concentrated but varied
and includes many stimulating learning activities.
Standard Course :
The aim of this course is to help you to communicate in spoken and
written Russian. The course covers all four skills: reading, listening,
speaking and writing. The course methods and materials are modern and appropriate
to your level and needs. In a land where talking is the national past time
you will have ample opportunity to converse with interesting people about
interesting things. Our courses not only bring to life the works of such
famous Russin writers as Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy, Fiodor Dostoevskiy
but also bring you into real life contact with people of different professional
and social groups. Having NO foreigners as guests of their city for more
than 30 years because of the military production industry, Saratovites
will be glad to share with you the unique social experience they have and
great cultural heritage that they carefully keep. We believe this to be
the ideal format in which to develop advanced language competence.
Private Tuition :
This is available to any student attending Course B who wishes to have
extra tuition in the afternoon to overcome particular linguistic difficulties
or to learn Russian for academic, techinical, commercial or professional
purposes. The classes will be held between 14:00 and 18:00 hours, Monday-Friday,
and may be arranged on arrival at the Summer Academy. If you expect to
have private tuition, please bring with you samples of authentic material
that you would like your tutor to use.
Fee: 9 USD per hour.

ENCOUNTER RUSSIA
The culture and society in which a language is spoken plays a crucial
role in shaping that language. We want to offer you more than just a language
course. Now you can explore the mysterious Russian character through a
real encounter with the heritage and traditions of our people. Students
taking the Culture and Social Studies program may study the following courses:
Socio-Cultural Studies:
Soul of Russia: classical and folk traditions in Russian literature
To be born Russian - God's gift or punishment? (Socio-psychological
and philosophical characters of the nature of Russians)
Phenomenon of Russian arts and music
200 hundred years of pilgrimage - the unique fortune and heritage of
Volga Germans
Socio-Political Studies:
Russia in the World and European Context
Contemporary Russian Politics: Reforms or Chaos
Social Environment before and after Perestroika
Socio-cultural Aspects of Russia
Those fully integrated courses offer a unique opportunity to see how
language interacts with national traditions, literature, music and aspects
of everyday life.Students will be guided towards the most appropriate course
for their learning needs. All the courses can be interpreted (or translated)
into English. If you want to request this, please, indicate it in your
enrollment form. Additional courses will also be available (subject to
a minimum enrollment of 5 students).
SOCIAL AND LEISURE PROGRAM
A range of social and leisure activities both in and out of Academy
are also offered. Through the history of the Russian state, Saratov has
traditionally renowned as a prominent cultural and educational center of
the Volga region. It has a local museum of Natural history, Museum of Anthropology
and Ethnography, Museum of History and Culture of Volga Germans, the first
Russian public Art Gallery "Volga Hermitage", the oldest circus in the
country, 5 state theaters. Being on the crossroads of Europe and Asia,
Saratov has become a unique intercultural centre, that unites different
ethnic groups and nationalities (Russians, Tartars, Jews, Ukrainians, Germans
and many others), as well as many religions (Russian Ortodox, Muslim, Jewich,
Catholic, Lutheran, Old Believers and many others). And of course, you'll
meet the famous hospitality of Russian people!
For the students of 6 - 8/10 week courses there can be organized field
studies according to their individual requests in the various institutions
of Saratov city, Volga region towns and in the countryside. We can also
offer you a wonderful riverboat trips on the Volga river for about a week
on your way back to Moscow. |
